Chemotherapy
The advent of newer drugs has widened the scope for research for a more effective and much cheaper
treatment for leprosy, ideal for mass application. It would have been impossible to imagine a decade
ago, that the early form (Paucibacillary) of leprosy would be cured with just one dose and that even
the advanced form (Multibacillary) would be cured with very brief treatment using a combination of
newer drugs. Rationalizing the chemotherapy and minimizing the duration of treatment have been the
priority of BLP for more than two decades.

Several drug trials with Short Course Chemotherapy (SCC) are now in progress at BLP. With SCC there
are untold advantages in terms of reducing the treatment cost and hastening the goal of leprosy
elimination. These SCC regimens consist of newer drugs such as Ofloxacin (O), Minocycline (M) and
Clarithromycin (C) administered along with Rifampicin (R) either continuously or intermittently in
various combinations and for varying durations. The response to these SCC regimens has been extremely
good. SCC is as effective as the conventional multidrug therapy regimens generally recommended.
The short-term observations of the newer drug trials in progress at BLP are very encouraging and we
are hoping to observe its lasting impact, which will bring a definite hope to persons suffering from
leprosy.
