Leprosy is caused by an organism, Mycobacterium Leprae, affecting in a large
majority, the skin and nerves. It is only mildly infectious and completely curable at
any stage. What makes it dreaded is the damage to the nerves giving rise to deformities in the
hands, feet, nose and eyes, which promote the awful stigma it does not deserve. These deformities
however are preventable and correctable. It has been estimated that, at present ,there may be
between 2 and 3 million persons with leprosy related impairments and disabilities in the world.
(WHO 2000)
Bombay Leprosy Project (BLP) is a registered non-profit voluntary organization working towards
achieving the goal of a "World Without Leprosy".
